چکیده

Pools and fluxes of N in wetland vegetation and soils were compared with an adjacent upland site to assess the relative importance of wetland versus upland landscapes in watershed Nretention in the Adirondack Mountains of New York (U.S.A.). The majority of N storage occurred in forest soils and wetland peat deposits (96 and 99% of total N in upland forests and wetlands, respectively). Annual N-uptake (49 kg N ha−1 yr−1) was greater for wetland vegetation than that of upland vegetation (30 kg N ha−1 yr−1). In the wetland the supply of N from mineralization (36 kg N ha−1 yr−1) was less than N-uptake; in contrast, upland N mineralization (76 kg N ha−1 yr−1) exceeded N vegetation uptake. Annual N-storage in peat was small due to low peat accretion rates. Wetlands acted as a sink for N and stored a disproportionally high fraction (15%) of catchment N in relation to their relatively small surface area (∼4%) within the catchment.

Effect of Assessment Scale on Spatial and Temporal Variations in CH4, CO2, and N2O Fluxes in a Forested Wetland

Emissions of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from a forested watershed (160 ha) in South Carolina, USA, were estimated with a spatially explicit watershed-scale modeling framework that utilizes the spatial variations in physical and biogeochemical characteristics across watersheds. The target watershed (WS80) consisting of wetland (23%) and upland (77%) was divided ...

Hurricane impacts on a pair of coastal forested watersheds: implications of selective hurricane damage to forest structure and streamflow dynamics

Hurricanes are infrequent but influential disruptors of ecosystem processes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Every southeastern forested wetland has the potential to be struck by a tropical cyclone. We examined the impact of Hurricane Hugo on two paired coastal South Carolina watersheds in terms of streamflow and vegetation dynamics, both before and after the hurricane’s passage in...

Effects of agricultural runoff on vegetation composition of a priority conservation wetland, Vermont, USA.

This study examined the effects of agricultural runoff on the vegetation structure of Franklin Bog, a priority conservation area located in a rapidly developing region of northwestern Vermont. Forested and agricultural runoff from the mixed land use watershed created differential vegetation patterns in the wetland, including weedy species introductions. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus...

Wetland nitrogen dynamics in an Adirondack forested watershed

Wetlands often form the transition zone between upland soils and watershed streams, however, stream–wetland interactions and hydrobiogeochemical processes are poorly understood. We measured changes in stream nitrogen (N) through one riparian wetland and one beaver meadow in the Archer Creek watershed in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, USA from 1 March to 31 July 1996. In the riparia...
